Imagine you are at the buffet of a party and the one person you’re absolutely dreading to see walks into the room, gets dragged around and introduced to everyone else, winning fans all over and you have no idea what to do? Rearranging the vegetables is Brooklyn Campbells solution when love interest Jessica Lennox arrives at the christmas party of Brooklyns advertising firm Soho Savvy:
“Oh look. The celery should probably go from green to greener. She could take care of that. Who was Serena introducing Jessica to now? What were they laughing about? A twinge of irritation shot through her. Too many carrots in the carrot compartment. Some of these should definitely go on another tray.”
And while we read about celery, broccoli and so on, she tries to find out which one of her three friends and business partners Sam, Hunter, or Mallory have invited Jessica; who happens to be the boss of the biggest competitor of Soho Savvy…
‘I’m fine. Did you hear me? Fine.‘ ‘You look fine. Especially that crease right between your eyebrows. What’s the tray for?’ ‘The carrots need room.’ ‘I’m sorry. Room?’ ‘To do carrot things, Mallory. Don’t look at me like that!’
The vegetable party scene is one of the many hilariously written parts of “Kiss the Girl”, a rich and well-developed story full of interesting  and loveable characters and some surprises. It made me laugh out loud quite often and even avoids the “never felt before”-clichĂ©s. Instead, “Brooklyn tumbled to a place she’d never been.” (pos. 4710) and “that unshakable connection between them had never felt so apparent.” (pos. 1925). So, I’m looking forward to read more from author Melissa Brayden, posts about “How Sweet it is”, “Waiting Wings”, and “Heart Block” will follow soon.
